Emma Stephenson won the Young Professional award at the 2012 Offshore Achievement Awards

Emma McLean (nee Stephenson) won the Young Professional award at the 2012 Offshore Achievement Awards (OAAs) for her impressive work on Shell’s Anasuria Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Vessel. In her role as Shift Supervisor Process, she was Area Authority for the ISSOW (Integrated Safe Systems of Work) System and responsible for process safety across the installation.
Judges of the 2012 OAAs were impressed by Emma’s proactive approach to updating, improving and implementing new safety procedures, resulting in a significant reduction of incidents offshore.
Emma, now 27, was put forward for the Young Professional award by her mentor, Jeannette Yuile, for her consistently high standard of work and her ability to tackle head on the day to day challenges that she faced.
Jeannette, Head of Sub-Surface Data Management Europe at Shell said:
"Emma has shown real talent since joining Anasuria in 2011. She has shown a strong, mature management style and a competency level that is on par with someone who has several more years of experience under their belt.
"Emma has shown an effective leadership style and managerial approach on every project she works on, which has seen her earn the respect of her colleagues and supervisors. She has gone from strength to strength since joining Shell and as a young professional working in the oil and gas industry, she has shown true dedication, enthusiasm and a real drive to succeed.
"Her success at the Offshore Achievement Awards has supported the increasing profile of women within the energy industry. Emma is a true role model for young people looking to succeed and I’m sure will inspire others to enter a career the oil and gas industry."
Commenting on her success, Emma said:
"Winning the ‘Young Professional’ category at the Offshore Achievement Awards was a huge achievement for me. It was very encouraging to be recognised at such a prestigious industry event.
"Having the support of colleagues and superiors is incredibly important for young professionals starting out and trying to make their mark on the industry. I am grateful of the guidance and encouragement that I have received from my colleagues without their recommendations and backing I wouldn’t have entered the awards and experienced the success that I have had following my win.
"Working offshore is very exciting however it can also be demanding at times for young oil and gas personnel. Having a colleague recognise their accomplishments and contribution can really boost their confidence, providing them with a feeling of worth and appreciation from their employer.
"My experience as a winner of the Offshore Achievement Awards has been extremely positive. Receiving this accolade has given me a great deal of recognition that has helped to progress my career. I have been lucky enough to move into my dream job within the rotating equipment discipline, which has offered endless opportunities for development, not to mention the chance to travel extensively.
"My new role, based in Holland, has provided the opportunity to learn an entirely new discipline of engineering, and I have been able to achieve my goal of getting more involved in the technical side of designing and servicing equipment like compressors and steam turbines.
"I have a real passion for working within the oil and gas sector and it is my experience, combined with an inquisitiveness of how the mechanics of engineering actually work, that has led me down this career path.
