BiSN doubles the celebrations with two nominations at OAAs!

February 2018

Having only been up and running for just over eight years, BiSN has achieved a lot in that time. Latest in that list of achievements is not just one nomination at the 2018 Offshore Achievement Awards, but two! Nominated for Great Company (SME) and Innovator, BiSN is being recognised for the success they have had introducing their innovative suite of tools to the market.

Going back to a method first explored in the 1930's, BiSN is the first to successfully implement bismuth based alloy as a sealant, introducing thermite heat rather than electrical heat. This resulted in the innovative Wel-Lok M2M technology - the core of BiSN.

We spoke to Paul Carragher, Chief Executive Officer of BiSN, about the company's double nomination.

Congratulations! And congratulation again! Two nominations - you must be delighted?

"We are! For us this is recognition of our dedicated employees and the hard work they have put into building the company to the point it is at today. It also reinforces the benefits and huge potential of our downhole sealing technology on a prestigious industry platform, which is a fantastic accomplishment for our team."

Beyond recognising your amazing team, what do you feel are the benefits of being nominated for awards such as this one?

"There are huge benefits with being involved in the Offshore Achievement Awards, which are well respected within the industry. It helps to raise our profile, and of course, our technology, opening it up to an ever larger, entirely relevant, audience."

One of the awards you're nominated for is Great Company (SME). As an SME, and a fairly new technology company to the market, what are the challenges and opportunities you face?

"For us, progress was slow initially due to lack of funding, but we overcame this and self-funded the first three years of our technology development. We also faced a conservative industry, initially apprehensive to embrace new ideas. This was a big challenge for us, along with the oil price downturn.

"Opportunities have included the funding support we have received from some of the industry’s major operators and services companies along with organisations including the OGTC’s Well P&A Call for Ideas initiative, which has been a great boost for us, whilst emphasising the worth of our product to the industry."

An an Innovator, how do you think innovation is best encouraged within companies, and within the industry in general?

"Our technology opens the door to a range of applications in completions, interventions and P&A - previously thought impossible. Innovation is about never giving up, and that attitude should be fostered within companies, making no idea too big or too small to be considered."
