Student Trophy Design Selected for OAA

Robert Gordon University student Ewan Gray has won a competition to have his trophy design brought to life and presented to the winners of the 2013 Offshore Achievement Awards.
The design from 21-year-old Ewan, from Orkney, was inspired by relief maps of North Sea oilfields and will be made from a combination of wood, glass and metal, with a variation for each category.
The judges were impressed with the thought behind Ewan's concept and the research that had gone into the development of the design, along with the high quality of his prototype.
Ian Phillips, director with Petrofac company CO2DeepStore Ltd, and the SPE board member responsible for organising the OAAs, said:
"We were impressed by the quality of entries for the competition which made picking a winner extremely challenging.
"We are confident that Ewan's trophies will look fantastic on the evening, as well as when they take pride of place in the winners' workplaces."
Third year students studying 3 Dimensional Design at Gray's School of Art were set the challenge in November by the organisers of the awards, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section.
The brief was to design a trophy which encompassed the aims of the Offshore Achievement Awards, and would be presented to the winners on the evening
Ian continued:
"The Offshore Achievement Awards acknowledge originality and innovation in the oil and gas sector, as well as talented individuals, company success stories and significant achievements in the sector. We were keen for this to be reflected in the trophy and believe we have found it with Ewan's design."
The student competition was introduced last year as part of SPE Aberdeen's successful relaunch of the awards. Due to the success, it has now been incorporated into the 3 Dimensional Design course to give students a real life design brief. It is expected that the competition will run again next year.

The Offshore Achievement Awards will take place on Thursday March 21, 2013. Following last year's sell out event, the black tie ceremony has moved to a larger venue at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
Entries for the awards closed on 1 December, with the shortlist being announced in January.
