Finalist Spotlight: Serica Energy

March 2020

A 2018 deal to acquire BP North Sea assets has pushed Serica Energy into the top ranks of UK oil and gas producers. For their tenacity, commercial skill and innovation, the company has been shortlisted in the Great Company (Large) category at the 2020 OAAs. Clara Altobell, Technical Vice President at Serica Energy, tells us more.

It’s a fantastic honour to be recognised and to be considered a large company, let alone a great company!

“This really demonstrates the journey that Serica has undertaken over the last few years and is an acknowledgement of the hard work and innovative skills of our staff. We’d love to win the award as recognition of the incredible achievements of everyone on the Serica team. More importantly we want to keep growing the company – we think we’re creating something special and we’d like to continue that!”

Serica’s Leadership Team benefits from a broad range of knowledge gained throughout the industry.

“Experience gained with major operators brings the background in the management of high value assets on a larger, global scale. The appreciation of the systems and processes needed to run a wide range of operations safely and efficiently contributes essential depth and breadth to our skillset, allowing us to rank and manage our varied portfolio with consistency and authority. Complementary to those key skills, the competitive environment of the independent sector brings decisiveness, dynamism and the tenacity to implement change or develop innovative solutions needed to drive commercial success.  Overall, the management team is best suited to working in the independent sector.  This is the combination that executed the BKR deal, continues to grow the company and operate our assets with higher production rates and lower operating costs than previous years.

“We value relationships with all stakeholders and appreciate the contribution from the regulator, partners and our supply chain.”

Our decision-making on contract awards is based solidly on fitness-for-purpose.

“Serica’s operations are centred in Aberdeen and decisions are made locally, rather than at a distant corporate HQ. This approach has allowed us to quickly build a network of trusted local service providers, including many small businesses. Our procurement system is transparent and we have a well-trained and responsive administration team so if smaller suppliers need some extra guidance or want to discuss contract terms we will respect and facilitate that.  This investment in working relationships means that our business is supported by best-in-class providers for both advice and equipment; essential to ensure we can turn around value-enhancing projects in a timely manner.”
